Endocrine System Vocabulary

1. Two glands enclosed in the scrotal sac of a male testes
2. Located behind the stomach; alpha and beta islet cells secrete hormones pancreas
3. Located in the neck on either side of the trachea; secretes thyroxine thyroid gland
4. Inner section of a gland above each kidney; secretes epinephrine adrenal medulla
5. Located at the base of the brain in the sella turcica; hypophysis pituitary gland
6. Outer section of a gland above each kidney: secretes cortisol, aldosterone, and sex hormones adrenal cortex
7. Located in the lower abdomen of a female; responsible for egg cell production and estrogen secretion ovaries
8. Four small glands on the posterior side of the thyroid gland parathyroid glands
1. Secreted by the ovaries; prepares the uterus for pregnancy progesterone
2. Secreted by beta islet cells of the pancreas; lowers blood sugar insulin
3. Secreted by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland; promotes milk secretion prolactin
4. Secreted by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland; stimulates secretion by the thyroid gland thyroid-stimulating hormone
5. Male hormone secreted by the testes testosterone
6. Secreted by the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland; stimulates contraction of the uterus during childbirth oxytocin
7. Secreted by the thyroid gland; increases metabolism in cells; T4 thyroxine
8. Secreted by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland; stimulates ovulation luteinizing hormone
9. Secreted by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland; stimulates growth of bones and soft tissues growth hormone (somatotropin)
10. Secreted by the parathyroid glands; increases blood calcium parathormone
