Continental Divide the watershed of a continent (especially the watershed of North America formed by a series of mountain ridges extending from Alaska to Mexico)
barrier islands a fence or other obstacle that prevents movement or access.
piedmont a gentle slope leading from the base of mountains to a region of flat land.
fall line a narrow zone that marks the geological boundary between an upland region and a plain, distinguished by the occurrence of falls and rapids where rivers and streams cross it.
basins a bowl for washing, typically attached to a wall and having faucets connected to a water supply; a washbasin.
hot spot a small area or region with a relatively hot temperature in comparison to its surroundings.
Piedmont a gentle slope leading from the base of mountains to a region of flat land
Appalachian Mountains a mountain range in the eastern United States extending from Quebec to the Gulf of Mexico; a historic barrier to early westward expansion of the United States
Rocky Mountains the chief mountain range of western North America; extends from British Columbia to northern New Mexico; forms the continental divide
Mississippi River a major North American river and the chief river of the United States; rises in northern Minnesota and flows southward into the Gulf of Mexico
Great Lakes a group of five large, interconnected lakes in central North America
Great Plains a vast prairie region extending from Alberta and Saskatchewan and Manitoba in Canada south through the west central United States into Texas; formerly inhabited by Native Americans
Canadian Shield large plateau that occupies more than 40% of the land area of Canada; it extends from the Great Lakes northward to the Arctic Ocean
Hudson Bay an inland sea in northern Canada
Cascade Range a mountain range in the northwestern United States extending through Washington and Oregon and northern California; a part of the Coast Range
Sierra Nevada a mountain range in southern Spain along the Mediterranean coast to the east of Granada
Coast Ranges a string of mountain ranges along the Pacific coast of North America from southeastern Alaska to Lower California
St. Lawrence River North American river; flows into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the North Atlantic
