|---|---|
| Codis | is the generic term used to describe the FBI’s program of support for criminal justice DNA databases as well as the software used to run these databases. |
| RFLP | restriction fragment length polymorphism: any variation in DNA between individuals revealed by restriction enzymes that cut DNA into fragments of different lengths in consequence of such variations. |
| Sticky Ends | A fragment of DNA (often produced by a staggered cut on the DNA using restriction enzymes) in which the terminal portion has a stretch of unpaired nucleotides, and the strands are not of the same length. |
| DNA Fingerprinting | The fingerprints are a bar-code like occurrence which can distinguish the uniqueness of one individual from another. This can be used to determine the presence of someone at a particular time by matching their fingerprints at the scene. |
| Cleave | |
| DNA | A double-stranded nucleic acid that contains the genetic information for cell growth, division, and function. |
| Comb | |
| Restriction Enzyme | An enzyme that catalyzes the cleavage of DNA at restriction sites, producing small fragments used for gene splicing in recombinant DNA technology and for chromosome mapping. |
| Exclusion | |
| Hybridization | The act or process of mating organisms of different varieties or species to create a hybrid. |
| VNTR | Variable number of tandem repeats; is a polimorfism where alleles of a chromosome are differents for number of repetitions. |
| Nucleotides | The basic building block of nucleic acids, such as DNA and RNA. It is an organic compound made up of nitrogenous base, a sugar, and a phosphate group. |
| Gel Lanes | Different vertical DNA columns made during the process of Electrophoresis. |
| DNA Fragments | Splitting the DNA into shorter pieces by endonucleolytic DNA CLEAVAGE at multiple sites. It includes the internucleosomal DNA fragmentation, which along with chromatin condensation, are considered to be the hallmarks of APOPTOSIS. |
| Palindrome | In genetics, a DNA or RNA sequence that reads the same in both directions. The sites of many restriction enzymes that cut (restrict) DNA are palindromes. |
| Wells | |
| STR | A pattern in DNA where two or more nucleotides are repeated and the repeated sequences are directly adjacent to each other, used in determining genetic profiles to identify an individual. |
| Electric Field | a property of a patch of space which causes the acceleration of electric charges located at that patch of space. |
