Supporting Systems

Vocabulary WordDefinition
Heart divided into right & left hearts, upper chamber (atrium) and lower chamber (ventricle). Valves regulate flow of blood through heart to pulmonary artery and aorta. Heart receives blood suppy from coronary arteries and veins.
Digestive system Purpose is to intake food for fat, carbs, vitamins, etc.
Nervous system Sensory nerves carry information to the spinal cord and brain, Motor nerves carry instructions from brain to target area.
Voluntary nervous system brain sends signals to the muscle.
Involuntary nervous system serves the inner functions of the body such as the heart and digestive organs.
Cardiovascular System Consists of heart and blood vessels. Carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to left side of heart and then to the muscle. Also carries oxygen poor blood from the muscle to right side of heart and then to lungs.
Blood Vessels consist of arteries, capillaries and veins
Veins return blood to the heart, oxygenated blood is returned to left side of heart, blood carrying waste is delivered into the capillaries
Arteries and arterioles conducting and distributing vessels for transporting blood away from the heart. Oxygen rich blood is distributed throughout the body while oxygen poor blood is delivered to the lungs
Capillaries exchange vessels, thin enough to allow oxygen and nutrients to pass through them into the cell.
Respiratory System Delivers oxygen to blood stream and removes carbon dioxide
