Trans-Saharan Summ.

This is a review for the summative on the Trans-Saharan trade route.

QuestionAnswer
What is the Trans-Saharan trade route? Trans-Saharan Trade route is a trade across the Sahara desert between the Mediterranean countries and sub-Saharan Africa.
How did people get across the Saharan desert? Caravans of camels allowed people to cross the desert.
What goods were traded, where did the come from, and why were they important? People in north wanted gold, and people in south wanted salt. Salt & gold were two main good traded. Salt is needed in your diet to survive. Gold shows how wealthy you are. Also traded items like glass, ceramics, cloth, copper, slaves.
Talk about the trading of slaves on the Trans-Saharan trade route. Muslims getting slaves in North Africa treated them fairly & pretty well. Most slaves were household servants. Many slaves died on trade route due to desert heat, lack of water. Over 9 million people forced into slavery along the trade route.
Talk about Islam on the Trans-Saharan trade route. Many traders converted to Islam (Islam was in North Africa) and brought it to West Africa south of the Sahara desert from the trading. This started at length under the Mali Empire.
