Yao? A ruler and cultural leader of ancient China who was a perfect model of the Confucian ideal of ruling by virtue, not force, in gov't; Confucius mentions him as a paragon ruler; a great benefactor (calendar that people used as a schedule)
Shun? A peasant who strictly adhered to concepts of filial piety; Yao received word of him, met him, and eventually made him his successor
Yu? A great benefactor b/c he created a new system of irrigation (diverting rivers, avoided floods, irrigated rivers); Shun's chosen successor; Emulated Yao/Shun, but visors made him choose son as successor, starting Xia ("Great") Dynasty
Xia Dynasty? "Great" Dynasty; started by Yu choosing son as successor; no archaeological proof of existence, but is supposed to have; Lasted a # of centuries
Jie? Last ruler of the Xia Dynasty; was a tyrant and was overthrown
Tang Overthrew Jie to end the Xia Dynasty and created the Shang (Yin) Dynasty
Zhou (4th tone) Ruler of the Shang Dynasty who was a tyrant, causing the Zhou (1st) people to rise up
Wen Zhou (1st) people rallied around this man, who they eventually called King Wen, in order to take down the Shang Dynasty; his son (King Wu) succeeded him following his death and kicked out the Shang Dynasty in 1045BCE, starting the Zhou (1st) Dynasty
Zhou (1st) Dynasty China's longest dynasty by far; kingship with feudal system of ruling (he gave loyal supporters / family members land, they would provide economic/military assistance to him)
Duke of Zhou Son of King Wen and Younger Brother of King Wu; was the protagonist in the Metal Bound Coffer Story; moral authority of the Zhou Dynasty; idolized by Confucius for his models and institutions
