| Latitude | Imaginary lines going around the earth from east to west. |
| Longitude | Imaginary lines going around the earth from north to south. |
| Ziggurat | Largest most impressive temple |
| Polytheism | The practice of worshiping many gods. |
| Cuneiform | Ancient form of wedge shapped writing. |
| Society | An organized community. |
| Scribe | A professional writer |
| Conquer | To defeat |
| Empire | A large territory |
| Dynasty | A ruling family; ex: Han dynasty |
| Conquest | Defeat of another person, nation, or empire. |
| Covenant | An agreement; ex: agreement between Abraham and God. |
| Monotheism | The practice of worshiping one god. |
| slavery | Practice of one person owning another person. |
| Descendant | People who are born later into the same family. |
| Synagogue | Jewish houses of worship. |
| Torah | Contains the first five books of the Hebrew Bible. Very holy book to the Hebrews. |
| Barter | Exchanging goods or services for equal value. |
| Delta | A triangular shaped area of soil at the mouth of a river that looks like fingers spread out. |
| Silt | A mixture of soil and small rocks. |
| Papyrus | Stems of the Papyrus plant were used to make paper; paper in Egypt. |
| Cataracts | Waterfalls; ex: waterfalls along the Nile River. |
| Unify | United into one country. |
| Pharaoh | Ruler or King in ancient Egypt |
| Hieroglyphics | Based on pictures, they were sacred carvings that represented objects or ideas. |
| Pyramids | Egyptian burial places for the Pharaohs. |

| Loess | Yellowish brown soil that blows in from the desert. |
| Terraces | Platforms of earth that look like stairs. |
| Levees | Dikes in walls that are built to protect areas from flooding. |

| Oracle Bones | Ancient bones commonly used during the Shang dynasty to predict the future. |
| Provinces | Political divisions of a country. |
| Ancestor | A relative who lived longer ago than a grandparent. |
| Civil Service | The practice of using skills and talents to work in the government. |
| Middleman | People who go between buyers and sellers. |
| Nobility | A high ranking social class. |
| Subcontinent | A large geographic region separated by water from other land areas. |
| Monsoon season | A season in India and South Asia that has heavy rains. |
| Subsistence farming | Farming practice which allows the farmer to possibly trade with neighbors, but crops are usually used to feed their own families. |
