specialization the development of different kinds of jobs
civilization a complex society that has cities, organized governments, art, religion, class divisions, and a writing system
irrigation using walls, waterways, and ditches to bring water to crops
city-state a city and land around it that had its own government and was not part of any larger unit
artisan skilled workers who made metal products, cloth, or pottery
cuneiform a form of writing developed by the people of Sumer
scribe mostly boys from wealthy families who learned how to write and became record keepers; they held honored positions in society, often going on to become judges and political leaders
empire a group of many different lands under one ruler
province a political district which had its own officials that governed; the officials collected taxes and enforced the king's laws
caravan a group of traveling merchants
astronomer people who study the heavenly bodies - they map the stars, the planets, and the phases of the moon
