| polis | Greeks version of a city-state |
| acropolis | in Greece, the "high city" part of the city that was up on a hilltop which they built temples to gods and goddesses |
| monarchy | a government where a king or queen is the ruler |
| aristocracy | a ruling faction made up up the "land-holding elite(people who had a lot of real estate...) |
| oligarchy | in this system of government, power is in the hands of a small, but powerful group, usually from the business class. |
| phalanx | a huge group of heavily armed foot soldiers |
| democracy | a government by the people |
| tyrant | people who gained power by force |
| legislature | a law-making group of people |
| direct democracy | a large number of (male) citizens took part in the day-to-day affairs of government (Today, in the US we have elected representatives...) |
| rhetoric | the art of speaking skillfully |
| tragedy | a play that tells the story of human suffering - usually ending with a complete disaster |
| comedy | humorous plays that made fun of people or customs |
