padroas Large stone pillars that are placed along the coast to match the furthest distance travelled by explorers down the African coast
colonies Foreign lands that a country claims to own
treaty of tordesillas An agreement made in 1494 Between the Portuguese and Spanish dividing up the new world So as to avoid conflict. Spain took all new lands found west of this line and Portugal all lands east.
circumnavigation To fly, Sale or walk around something; to sail around the world
conquistadores a Spanish word meaning conquerors; The explorers who conquered large areas of Central and South America
