Justinian Byzantine emperor who ruled from AD 527 to AD 565; reformed the law by collecting all of the ancient laws of Rome and editing them into a collection which was later called Justinian's Code.
Justinian Code The body of Roman Civil Law collected and organized by order of the Byzantine emperor Justinian around AD 534
Hagia Sophia The Cathedral of Holy Wisdom in Constantinople, built by order of the Byzantine emperor Justinian
Patriarch a principal bishop in the eastern branch of Christianity
Icon a religious image used by eastern Christians
Excommunication the taking away of a person's right of membership in a Christian church
Cyrillic Alphabet an alphabet for the writing of Slavic languages, devised in the ninth century AD by Saints Cysil and Methodius
Slavs People from the forests north of the Black Sea, ancestors of many people in Eastern Europe today
Czar a Russian emperor
The Great Schism The official split of the Christian church into the Roman Catholic in the west and the Orthodox Church in the east.
