delta is a triangle-shaped marsh that is formed by deposits of silt at the mouth of some rivers
dynasty a ruling family
pharoah Egyptians rulers. Egyptians believed the pharaoh was a god. A pharaoh had absolute power, owned and ruled all the land.
vizier the "right-hand-man" to the pharaoh. Supervised the business of government-tax collection, farming, irrigation.
tomb place where the dead are buried
pyramids Tombs for eternity. Built by hand - took years to finish and needed planning/organization.
afterlife What happens after one dies. Egyptians believed in afterlife preserved their bodies, burying them with everything they would need in their new lives.
mummification preservation of the dead
hieroglyphics form of writing carved into stone
demotic a simpler(than hieroglyphics) form of writing for everyday use
papyrus a plant that grows along the Nile. Egyptians made it into a paper-like material that they wrote on with reed pens and ink
ziggurat pyramid-shaped temples
hierarchy a system of ranks
cuneiform first form of writing - done by making marks on clay. (from the Latin cuneus - wedge)
civil law laws that dealt with private matters - like business contracts, taxes, marriage and divorce
satrap a governor of a province in the Persian empire
barter economy a system in which people trade goods or services for another
colony a territory settled and ruled by people from a distant land
monotheistic a belief in one God
covenant a binding agreement
prophet spiritual leader
ethics moral standards of behavior
diaspora a scattering of people(when Jews were forced to leave their homeland, they settled in different parts of the world)
