Persian Wars

Persian Empire The enemy to Athens and Sparta.
Allies states that agree to help each other against a common enemy. (Athens and Sparta against Persia)
Persian Wars Persians invade Greece in the 400 BCE's and a series of wars begin.
Persian Empire and the Ionian Revolt Marked the beginning of the Greek-Persian wars. Started in 499 BCE. Ionians ask Greece to help and Greece sent Athens soldiers and ships. Athenians went home after initial success and then Ionians were defeated by Persians.
The Battle of Marathon: The Greek victory Greek General Maltiades and army surrounded the Persians by sending in the center first and then the left and right. The persians went running for their ships.
Calvary Soldiers who ride on calvary
The Battle of Thermopylae: The bravery of the 300 (Persians overwhelming win Persian army had 180,000 men, Athens and Sparta only had 6,000-7,000. 300 Spartans stayed and fought but all died in the war. The Greeks never forgot their bravery.
Hellespont The long, narrow body of water betwen Europe and Asia in present-day Turkey.
The Battle of Salamis: The Navy to the Rescue At the Battle of Salamis, the Greeks tricked the Persians into entering a narrow channel, where the Greeks rammed the Persian ships. Once again the Greeks had beaten the mighty Persian Empire
