Neolithic Revolution Study Guide

| Neolithic Revolution | A period of human history that occured from 8000 to 4000 BCE. Time period where the shift from the hunting of animals and the gathering of food to the keeping of animals and the growing of food on a regular basis occured. |
| Farming | The growing of food on a regular basis, also known as systematic agriculture, created an abundance of food that allowed civilization to emerge in Mesopotamia. |
| Domestication | The adaptation of animals for human use added a steady source of meat, milk, and wool. Animals could also be used for work. |
| The Six Basic Characteristics of Civilization | Cities, Government, Religion, Social Structure, Writing and Art |
| Fertile Cresent | An arc of land that stretches from the Mediterranean Sea to the Persian Gulf,because this land had rich soil and abundant crops, it was able to sustain an early civilization. Located in the modern day country of Iraq. |
| Mesopotamia | "Land between the rivers" located on the eastern end of the Fertile Crescent between the Tigris and the Euphrates Rivers. |
| Early Mesopotamian Civilizations | Sumerians, Akkadians, Babylonians. |
| City-States | The basic units of Sumerian civilization. As cities expanded they came to have political conttrol over the surrounding countryside. |
| Ziggurat | A massive stepped tower that housed the most prominent building in a Sumerian city the temple. The Sumerians believed that gods and goddesses owned the cities. The temples and related buildings served as the center of the city physically, econ.&politic. |
| Empire | A large political unit or state, usually under a single leader that controls many peoples or territories. |
| Polytheistic | The belief in many gods. |
