| artifact | something made by humans -like tools, pottery |
| anthropology | study of human and their societies |
| technology | skills and tools people use to meet their basic needs |
| historian | a person who studies how people lived in the past |
| geography | study of people, their environments and resources available to them |
| latitude | measures distance north or south |
| longitude | measures distance east and west |
| nomad | people who move from place to place - follow their food sources |
| glacier | thick sheets of ice |
| bureaucracy | system of managing governments, in which state officials make decisions rather then elected representatives |
| polytheistic | to believe in many gods |
| artisan | skilled craft workers - metal working(jewelry), pottery |
| pictogram | simple drawings to show the words(stories) they represented |
| scribe | specially trained people who learned to read and write |
| city-state | a political unit that included a city and the surrounding lands and villages |
| empire | group of state or territories controlled by one ruler |
| steppe | dry grasslands where nomadic herders fed their livestock |
| cultural diffusion | the spread of ideas, customs and technologies from one group of people to another |
