| Visa | Lets a person enter and exit a country (esp. the united states) |
| Empathy | An emotion that makes you feel and understand how someone else is feeling and to condole them. |
| Migration | When a person or group moves from place to place (ex. migration from Mexico to Texas) |
| Emigration | Moving out of a country (ie. emigrating from the states to canada) |
| Immigration | Coming to a country (ie. immigrants from the us in canada) |
| White flight | when white people move away from other races because of racial prejudices |
| cultural capital | the social aspect of a group of people that isn't based on financial status but rather how educated they are, their physical appearance, ect. |
| Fixed mindset | When people can't accept new things or facts into their life because they are against something they previously thought. |
| Growth mindset | When people accept and embrace new cultures and such |
| Ethnocentrism | when people think that their ethnicity/race is superior to others |
| stereotype | an assumed fact placed upon a certain social group or race based on physical and/or mental traits and it is used against them |
| Racism | Discrimination against a certain group just because of their race |
| discrimination | When people treat others badly based on their gender, race, physical and mental ability, ect. |
| Plyler vs. Doe and Title VI | Plyler vs. Doe was a supreme court case which stated that immigrant families had to pay $1000 dollars for their child to go to school. Title VI stated that government agencies (like public schools) had to treat all people as equals |
| assimilate | to try to fully understand something |
| Acculturate | to try to understand the cultural traits of another social group |
| Dominant/majority group | not necessarily the biggest group. the dominant group is the most powerful group (for example the dominant group in the us is whites) |
| xenophobia | a fear of people from other countries |
| push factors | push factors "push" people out due to hatred from other people, bad things in a country, ect. |
| pull factors | pull factors "pull" people in with promises of good things (lots of food, lots of money, lot of land, ect.) |
| consumer | someone who buys products |
| worker | someone who works to produce something or achieve a goal |
| Producer | a person or a group of people that produce something like fruit usually to sell. being a producer is hard |
| media literacy | being aware of the content of the media |
