Zhou Dynasty A line of rulers in China from about 1045 to 256 B.C.E.
Qin Dynasty The Chinese dynasty (246 B.C. to 206 B.C.) that established the first centralized imperial government and built much of the Great Wall
Shang Dynasty The Chinese Dynasty that ruled the area around the Huang He from 1700 to 1122 B.C.E
Han Dynasty The Chinese dynasty that ruled from about 206 B.C.E. to 220 C.E.
Mandate of Heaven The Chinese belief or idea that a ruler’s power stemmed from divine authority or came from divine approval.

Confucius A Chinese philosopher and teacher named Kongfuzi who is called Confucius by westerners.
Confucianism A Chinese philosophy that emphasizes proper behavior.

Laozi A Chinese philosopher who founded Daoism.
Legalism A Chinese philosophy that emphasizes strict obedience to laws.
Bureaucracy A system in which non elected government officials are organized into specialized departments and operate according to fixed rules within a hierarchy of authority
Civil Servant A person who works for a government.
Meritocracy A system in which advancement is based on individual ability or achievement and not on birth rights.
