| What did Western Europe look like after the fall of Rome? | Early 500’s Europe divided into many small kingdoms. This was the beginning of the Middle Ages or Medieval Age (lasted from 500-1500). Much fighting between the kingdoms until the Franks began to unite the kingdoms together. |
| How did Christianity spread in the early Middle Ages across Europe? How did monks help people? | Christianity spread throughout the kingdoms from missionaries, monks, pope. Monks provided healthcare, ran schools, copied books (religious and ancient texts of Greeks and Romans). |
| Talk about the Franks, who built a large kingdom in the area today known as France. | Under the rule of Charlemagne, the Franks became Christians and built a large empire. Charlemagne conquered neighboring tribes and built schools in his empire. After Charlemagne’s death, weak rulers took his place and invasions happened. |
| Who invaded the Frank's Empire and from where did the invade from? | Muslim (from the south), Magyars (from the east), Vikings (from the north). The Vikings were the most feared and brutal. |
| What is feudalism and why did it start in Western Europe? | Feudalism: system of relationships and promises between lords and vassals. The cause of feudalism was the inability of the kings of the Franks to defend their land from the invaders who were coming for all sides (Vikings, Magyars, Muslims). |
| How did feudalism work? Include the words nobles (lords), vassals, and kings in your answer. *** A noble and lord are the same thing.** | Kings gave land to lords to defend it and their power grew. Lords hired knights to protect the land and in return lords gave them a piece of their land called a fief. Knights were now a vassal (person who promises to support a lord in exchange for land). |

| What was a vassals duties to their lord? | Give lord money on special occasions (marriages, festivals), give lord food and shelter when he visits. Fight with lord in battle |
| What is the manor system? | Manor System: process of turning a piece of land called a fief into a self-sufficient property. |
| How did the manor system work? | Knights no time to farm the fiefs (land) so they turned them into manors and became the lords of their manors. Each manor had castle, pasture, fields, forests, houses for workers, church. Peasants/serfs farmed land, gave lord food, got protection. |
