What happened in November 1985? Gorbachev met Reagan at Geneva, yet both could not agree on arms reduction. Reagan unwilling to drop "Star Wars"
What was the Intermediate Nuclear Forces Treaty and when was it signed? December 1987 in Washington. This agree on all nuclear missiles being either taken out of Europe or destroyed.
When did the Soviets withdraw from Afghanistan and why? February 1989. It was too difficult a battle, and an immensely unpopular war. "Soviet Vietnam" had lost 25,000 men and Gorbachev knew he could not sustain the war, needing money for his new reforms.
What happened a month later? March 1989- Gorbachev told leaders of Eastern Europe that Soviet forces would no longer keep them in power. A changing in the USSR's foreign policy. "Freedom is a choice... a universal principal"
August 24 1989? Free elections won in Poland by Lech Walesa's Solidarity Party
When did Eric Honecker, leader of East Germany, resign? October 18 1989
What was the lifespan of the Berlin Wall? 13 August 1961- 9 November 1989
When was the Czechoslovakian Velvet Revolution? November 17-27.
When did communism fall in Romania? December 21st. Nicolae Ceascaeu and wife murdered.
When did the Communist Party cease to exist in Russia? August 1991
When did the USSR fall? December 21 1991
