What were two key dates in the Berlin Wall being put up? 13 August 1961- it goes up. 16 October 1961- Soviet tanks go head to head with US tanks until truce called
When was the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Cuban Revolution? 1962 and 1959 (Bay of Pigs Fiasco in 1961)
What happened on October 22nd, 24th, 26, 27 and 28? Kennedy goes on TV. Blockade. Soviet ship searched, no nukes. Kruschev tells Kennedy to withdraw blockade. Kruschev tells Kenndy to remove missiles from Cuba. Kennedy says he will if USSR missiles are gone from Cuba. Soviet ships turn back from blockade
What was the consequence of the Cuban Missile Crisis? The Molink- direct link between Moscow and Washington created
What happened in 1968? The Prague Spring. Alexander Dubcek brought human reforms to Czechoslovakia- "socialism with a human face" Soviets invaded CZ on August 20
What Doctrine was created in 1968? Brezhnev Doctrine- saying if any communist country attempted to make Western-style reforms, it was up to other communist countries to stop them
Where did Nixon visit in 1972? China and Russia to promote detente due to the mounting costs of the Arms Race and both nations feared MAD.
Who was Willy Brandt and what did he do in 1972? West German Chancellor, visited East Germany, USSR and Poland to show that West Germany was a threat to no one
When was the Salt I Treaty signed? May 29 1972. Agreed to limit the number of nuclear weapons both sides possessed.
When and why did the USSR invade Afghanistan? December 1979. They feared Islam spreading into Communist, atheistic USSR and wanted to support to pro-Soviet side in the civil war.
Why was detente struggling towards 1979? - The USA suspected the USSR knew more about the surprise Egypt attack in the Yom Kippur war of 1973 than they were letting on Many in the USA felt the arms agreements were just benefitting the soviets Expansionist policies in Ethiopia
What were the consequences of the USSR invading Afghanistan? Detente ended- cancelled Salt II talks. USA boycotted Moscow Games and stopped trade between the USA and USSR.
When did Ronald Reagan become President? 1981
When was "Star Wars" implemented and what was it? 1983, a huge missile defence system. Reagan did not believe in detente- "a one way street which the Soviet Union has used to pursue its' own goals". Renewing tension in the relationship and heralding the Second Cold War
What happened in 1983? Soviets shot down a Korean airliner that flew into Soviet airspace. 296 people die. "callous and brutal attitude to human life"
What happened in 1984? USSR boycotted Los Angeles Olympic Games
What happened in 1985? Gorbachev comes to power. Introduces glastnost and perestroika and sets about trying to achieve peace with the USA.
