When was the Gulf of Tonkin incident? Late July 1964
What happened? The US naval destroyer USS Maddox claimed it was attacked by North Vietnamese torpedoes, twice, while assisting South Vietnamese in the Gulf of Tonkin
What did Lyndon Johnson do in retaliation? Passed the Gulf of Tonkin resolution in Congress that gave him the power "to take all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the forces of the US"
What happened in early 1965? The first US troops were sent into Vietnam and Operation Rolling Thunder commences/
What was the public's first reaction to the War? Happy- Johnson's popularity increased 30% overnight.
How many combat troops were in Vietnam by 1967 and how much was it costing? 430,000, and $35 million a day
How did the Viet Cong fight? Using guerilla ambush tactics and using the jungle to their advantage. They planted booby traps and hid in a network of complex underground tunnels that were near impossible to find.
What was initiated in June 1967? Operation Phoenix, a US sponsored operation to find and arrest suspected Viet Cong operatives. Nearly 20,000 people were assassinated through this, and 28,000 were tortured.
What happened in January 1968? Khe Sanh- a huge Viet Cong offensive on a US Marine base as a diversion tactic for the Tet Offensive on the 30 January.
What were the after effects of the Tet Offensive? It was a huge political defeat. It proved the war was far from over, and televised brutality lost the support of the nation.
What was the public opinion on the war, now? "The only rational way out will be to negotiate" Walter Cronkite. 60% of Americans viewed the Tet Offensive as a defeat.
What happened to troop morale? Plummeted. The first recorded incidents of "fragging" occurred and over a third of troops were experimenting with drugs.
What happened in March 1968? LBJ announced he would not stand for re-election
Who won the US Presidential Elections in 1968? Richard Nixon
Who was William Calley? The man in charge of the My Lai massacre in 1968, killing 504 men, women, and children. Sentenced to life imprisonment.
What was Vietnamization and when was it announced? Vietnamization was the policy of the USA steadily pulling troops out of Vietnam while giving control and economic support to the South Vietnamese Army
What did Nixon do in the early 1970s? Invaded Cambodia, without permission or knowledge from Congress, and attempted to invade Laos to sever the Ho Chi Minh trail
What happened on 4 May 1970? Kent State University shootings that rocked the nation. Four students killed by National Guardsmen. Turned public opinion even more.
What happened in 1972? Henry Kissinger initiated peace talks between the North and the USA which Thieu refused to attend.
What happened in January 1973? A peace agreement was signed and a ceasefire declared.
How many men had the USA lost? 57,000.
What also happened in January 1973? Nixon was implicated in the Watergate scandal and lost all his credibility, thus resigning in 1974.
What happened in 1975? Saigon fell to the North Vietnamese. Vietnam was now one Communist nation and the war was over.
