Key Dates of Diem's Rule

What did the Geneva Conference agree? That Vietnam should again be partitioned, that a nationwide election on reunification should be held in two years, and that the French troops should leave Vietnam in one year.
What did the USA actually think? That elections should not happen due to the Domino Theory- "Possibly 80 percent of the population would have voted for the Communist."
What was Diem's full name? Ngo Dinh Diem
What were some good things he did? Created SEATO, eradicated crime syndicates, and peacefully integrated North Vietnamese refugees.
What did Bao Dai accuse him of? "Selling the blood of the Vietnamese" in his repressive measures and harsh crackdowns
What did he do with the government? Made all his extended and close family members of the government rather than letting the people of Vietnam elect representatives
How many Viet Minh sympathizer villages did he destroy? Nearly 16,000
What was the Strategic Hamlet programme? Relocating villagers from areas where Viet Cong were active, to villages protected by militia. This was resented enormously- "concentration camp villages"- Pham Van Dong
What did Diem do to Buddhists? Refused to allow them to fly their flag in celebration of religious holidays, but allowed Catholics to fly theirs. Clear religious bais.
What did the Buddhists do in retaliation in 1963? The self-immolation of Thich Quang Duc
What did Madame Nhu, Diem's sister-in-law, say about it? "Let them burn and we shall clap our hands"
What did Diem do in 1956? Refused to hold elections promised by the Geneva Conference as he knew Communists would win
What happened in December 1960? The Viet Cong is formed amongst Viet Minh in the South.
What happened in August 1963? The US ambassador to Vietnam was approached by a group of generals who asked for US approval for a coup
What did Kennedy say about the coup? "The government has gotten out of touch with the people"
What happened in November 1963? Diem was overthrown and executed, Kennedy was shot, and Lyndon Baines Johnson is sworn in as President of the United States
