| domesticate | to adapt wild plants or tame wild animals for human use |
| Old Stone Age (Paleolithic Age) | a time period BEFORE the agricultural revolution, during which early humans made tools and weapons from stone |
| hunter-gatherers | early humans that hunted wild animals and gathered wild plants for food |
| irrigation | using canals to supply land with water |
| surplus | more than is needed |
| artisan | a worker who is especially skilled in crafting items by hand |
| fossil | naturally-occurring remains of a plant, animal, or human that lived in ancient times |
| artifact | an ancient item made by humans |
| civilization | a society with cities, government, job specialization, and social classes |
| social classes | groups of people with similar backgrounds, incomes, and ways of life |
| New Stone Age (Neolithic Age) | the time period AFTER the agricultural revolution |
