Reference map mapping that includes all possible valid relationships between a source system and a target system.
thematic map a type of map or chart especially designed to show a particular theme connected with a specific geographic area.

Distance scale a scale that tells the distance
direction indicator is usually an arrow (or a compass rose) printed on a map which indicates the orientation of the map in reference to the cardinals N-S-E-W.
inset map a small map or diagram set within the borders of a larger one.
legend A key to what the symbols or pictures in a map mean.
latitude(parallels) lines are also sometimes called parallels because they are parallel and equidistant from each other
longitude(meridians) an imaginary great circle on the surface of the earth passing through the north and south poles at right angles to the equator; "all points on the same meridian have the same longitude"
equator The imaginary great circle around the earth's surface, equidistant from the poles and perpendicular to the earth's axis of rotation.
prime meridian the meridian running through Greenwich, England, from which longitude east and west is reckoned.
northern hemisphere the half of the earth between the North Pole and the equator.
southern hemisphere hat half of the earth lying south of the equator.
eastern hemisphere a geographical term for the half of the Earth that is east of the Prime Meridian
western hemisphere The half of the earth comprising North America, Central America, and South America.
continents shelf is the edge of a continent that lies under the ocean.
map grip a man-made system used to accurately measure the position of any place on the surface of the Earth
