renaissance in the north -era of renewed interest and remarkable development in art, literature, science and learning rebirth.
printing revolution -Johann Gutenberg= utilized moveable type. printing press mass production printed 1st complete edition of bible using moveable type. printing revolution transformed europe be4 only few 1000 books existed in europe.
printing revolution -monks mostly copied books by hand very slow by 1500 a.d. 15-20 million volumes produced on printing press books became cheaper & easier to produce which increased literacy readers access to broad range of knowledge exposed europeans 2 new ideas & places
northern renaissance artists -began in flanders-prosperous region in northern france, Belgium, netherlands. spread flanders- spain, france, germany, and england.
flemish painters -jan van Eyck- 1 of the most important portrayed townspeople & religious scenes- rich & realistic Pieter Brueghel vibrant colors & scenes of peasant life & common people
durer -german painter. pioneer in spreading renaissance ideas to northern europe. applied painting techniques learned in italy to engraving perfect process
engraving -art form in which an artist etches a design on a metal plate. with acid and uses the plate to make multiple prints. many of durer's engravings & paintings = religious upheaval
Northern humanists and writers -helped spread renaissance ideas. stressed education & classical learning hoping for religious & moral reform many began writing in vernacular everyday language of ordinary people.
st. thomas more's ideal society -english humanist.pressed for social reform wrote utopia describes an ideal society men and women live in peace and harmony. no one idle all educated justice ends crime rather than eliminate criminal
Shakespeare writes for all time -english poet and playwright wrote 37 plays still performed today. some believe Shakespeare greatest playwright of all time. genius expressed universal themes in everyday realistic settings.
protestant reformation -religious upheaval. religious movement in 1500's that split christian church in western europe and led to the establishment of a number of new churches.
back ground to reformation -poor + violent lives wealth was distributed unequally humanist ideas education+ social reform took root used humanist ideas to question the church.
church abuses middle ages increasingly involved in worldly affairs popes-led lavish lives supported arts. hired artists to beautify churches.
indulgences -needed $ to construct st. peters basllica in rome approved the sale of indulgences
early revolts against church -john wycliffe- launched systematic attack against church sermons + writings calling for change. jan hus - czech led reform movement immorality + worldliness of catholic church
martin luther catalyst of change protests against church abuses. erupted full scale revolt. german monk+ theology professor triggered reformation early life. prayed fasted tried to live holy life grew disillusioned church corruption worldliness
95 theses -luther drew up 95 theses arguments against indulgences/ venality + worldliness of church. many supporters thought of him as a hero
