Dermal puncture

Procedure for dermal puncture

QuestionAnswer
Obtain and examine requisition
Greet patient, explain procedure
Identify patient using 2 identifiers (name, DOB)
Compare patient info. W/ requisition or armband if inpatient
Sanitize hands, put on gloves
Position patient
Select appropriate puncture site
Warm site if applicable
Cleanse site w/alcohol and allow to air dry
Assemble rest of equipment
Smoothly perform puncture
Dispose of sharp in sharps container
Wipe away 1st drop of blood
Fill tubes in correct order of draw
Apply pressure to puncture with gauze
Seal tube, invert to mix (8-10 times)
Label tube
Examine puncture site for stoppage of bleeding, apply bandage
Dispose of other used supplies as needed
Thank patient-remove gloves, sanitize hands
