The United Nations The U.N. is an NGO at the highest level, and helps to bring countries together to deal with problems concerning humanity. Human Rights Human rights first became a major concern after the persecution of Jews in the Holocaust, and it has been the focus of most governmental and nongovernmental organizations to stop injustices done to humans by other humans. "Operation Iraqi Freedom" A multicoalitional force invaded Irag to wage further war against terrorism by ousting Saddam Hussein adn creating a democratic state. Japan's economic miracle in Japan, postwar they had little resources and no overseas empire. In this time they beneffitted from the U.S. and then persued export. The European Union A union starting with 6 nations(now 15). A common market, free trade & travel within union for members. 11 adopted common currency, the Euro in 1999. They had expectations of a Euro. political union eventually. It brought nations of Europe together in a union and allowed for a close communication and understanding of eachother. started in 1957. 40 Europe
OPEC Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. Est. in 1960 to raise global oil prices. After the Arab-Israeli war it replaced the embargo on oil to the U.S., the oil prices quadroupled from '73-'75 starting a global recession. It was a great turning point in the oil industry because of the great economic impact it had on the U.S. 1960. effects seen in '73-'75. 40 effects seen in the U.S.
Global Barbie Iran changed the U.S. Barbie to Sara who was more modest for Islamic values. Japan's Barbie was much younger but Barbie's image wasn't rejected. It showed cultural imperialism through Islamic reaction and Japan's modification of the U.S.'s different look through cultures. mid to late 1900s 40 U.S., Iran, Japan.
20th Century population increase world population went from 500mill.-2.5 bill. (1650-1950). Asia and Africa saw increase after WWII. From 1994 in the world there were about 5.5 bill. and there is estimated to be 11.6 bill. by 2200. However, fertility rates have fallen for past 20 yrs. Environmental Impact Today, urbanization and agricultural exp. threaten biodiversity. Gas emissions & coal burning contribute to global warming. In 1997 59 states met in Kyoto to try to cut out C02 emissions in the world. The growth in the world is creating a growing pressure in the world to save the environment and this growing issue requires the cooperation of everyone to help the world making it a huge effort and movement of the time. present day 40 world wide
