Africa

The Middle Passage the transportation of millions of Africans across the Atlantic Ocean to the Americas to be sold as slaves
Mercantilism Colonies exist to benefit the mother country by providng raw materials and then purchasing the manufactured goods
Nationalism Pride in and loyalty to one's country
Ethnocentrism Belief that you are a superior culture
Triangular Trade Trade that sent raw materials to Europe, manufactured goods to Africa, and slaves to the Americas
Berlin Conference European nations met to determine how they would split up Africa
Imperialism A strong country takes over a weak country
Scramble for Africa Europeans tried to quickly take as much land in Africa as they could so they could have more territory and raw materials
Boers/ Africaaners Dutch/ Europeans that lived in Africa
Apartheid (Apartness) To legally separate by race
Civil disobedience A method of nonviolent protest against laws or policies in order to force a change
African National Congress (ANC) A united group of black Africans that worked together to end apartheid.
Polytheistic Belief in many gods
Monotheistic Belief in one god
Atheism Do not believe in any god
Anarchy Absence of Government (no laws)
Monarchy A government ruled by a royal family (King or Queen)
Theocracy A government in which religious leaders rule
Democracy A government in which the people have the power
Dictatorship A government in which one person has absolute control (usually because they took over by force)
Primary source Examples: Diary, journal, photograph, auto-biography, letters, official documents (Constitution)
Secondary source Examples: Textbook, novel, encyclopedia
Encomienda system The spanish settlers were given land and natives to entice them to come to Latin America
Cultural diffusion Two or more cultures 'mix'and take on characteristics of each other
Cultural diversity Two or more cultures live near each but stay isolated and do not mix
