| indulgences | certificates that were awarded that would forgive sins that were committed and reduce time in purgatory |
| purgatory | according to Catholic belief, the place where a person's soul goes after death to be purified before entering heaven. |
| Martin Luther | man whose actions sparked the Protestant Reformation. Posted the 95 theses, preached against indulgences, broke from the Catholic Church |
| justification by faith | idea that salvation could be achieved by faith alone, not good works. Key component of the teachings of Martin Luther and John Calvin |
| Ninety-five theses | document created by Martin Luther criticizing the Catholic Church that was nailed to the door of the church at Wittenberg |
| vernacular | local language. Example: Martin Luther translated the New Testament into German (the local language in Germany) |
| John Calvin | protestant who teaches the ideas of justification by faith and predestination |
| predestination | belief that God determines in advance the fate of all people at birth and directs all events past, present, and future. |
| Henry VIII | leader of the English Reformation. Split from the Catholic Church b/c of conflict over annulling his marriage. Formed the Church of England. |
| Church of England | formed when Parliament passed the Act of Supremacy. Made the monarch of England the head of the church. |
| Counter Reformation | reform movement of the Catholic Church designed to stop the spread of Protestantism and increase the popularity of Catholicism. |
