Venice Renaissance city that became wealthy because of it's strategic location for trade
Leonardo da Vinci Renaissance sculptor and painter who also studied anatomy, science, math, architecture, etc. Was also an inventor. A real Renaissance Man.
Humanism The idea that each individual has dignity and worth and should excel at a variety of activity. Valued human wisdom and secular (this life) as well as religious (afterlife) thought.
Gutenberg Man who invented the printing press with moveable type which allowed a quicker and cheaper spreading of ideas and increased literacy rates.
vernacular local language
Renaissance Man term for a person who is good at or interested in many things. An example is Leonardo da Vinci
Florence The birthplace of the Renaissance
printing press invented by Johannes Gutenberg. Led to the spread of ideas and increased literacy rates
Renaissance Period in Europe following the Middle Ages that is a rebirth in learning and Greek and Roman thought. Began in Italy because of the strategic location.
Machiavelli Author of the prince who stated that the ends justify the means. Thought rulers should do whatever is necessary to stay in power and do what is best for their subjects, even if what they had to do was immoral
Michelangelo painter of the Sistine Chapel and sculptor of David.
