| Helot | a member of the lowest social class of Sparta - non Spartiates - indigenous to Laconia and Messenia |
| Mothake | A type of 'inferior' - a helot who was adopted by Spartan family to be a playmate with their son. |
| Tresante | When a Spartan was stripped of their citizenship and relegated to this status as an indication of cowardice. |
| Neodamodes | Means 'new citizens'. Refers to slaves freed due to bravery, and thus granted superior social status. |
| Perioikoi | Possibly the indigenous peoples of Lakonia - they retained semi independent status from Sparta, but owed them tax and loyalty in exchange. |
| Lacedaemon | Another name for the state of Sparta |
| Spartiate | This term refers to a Spartan male citizen. It excluded Spartan females |
| Rhetra | This was the constitution which Lykurgus apparently established. |
| Apollo | This deity apparently gave Lykurgus details of how the Spartan constitution should be set up. |
| Athena | This deity was worshipped by the Spartans and had a temple of bronze located in Sparta. |
| Pitane | One of the original villages of Sparta. |
| Amyklae | This was the 5th and final village to by unified as Sparta. |
| Phalanx | A military formation in which shields interlock to form a solid barrier against the enemy. |
| Syssitia | The Pheiditia which met monthly and required contributions of food and money according to Plutarch |
| Krypteia | This organisation was under the control of the ephorate for the administration of fear and order within the state. It recruited young graduates of the agoge. |
| Kleros | Spartan men and women could inherit this from family. It provided status and opportunity for wealth and economic independence. |
