What was the effects of the Scientific Revolution? New technologies, renaissance humanists had mastered Greek and Latin, and math played a key role in scientific revolution.
What was Laissez-faire economy? A Market economy which relies chiefly on market forces to allocate goods and resources and determine prices.
What is the Bill of Rights - liberal or conservative? Liberal
What were the elements of the Reign of Terror? Many to list - look at your notes!
What was Storming the Bastille? Bastille was an old fortress used as a prison and armory, French guard joined the attack and after 4 hours of fighting, prison warden surrendered and the rebels released prisoners to cut off his head, rebels went to Bastille for weapons.
Why did the Industrial Revolution start in Great Britain? Many new inventions, improvements in agriculture, new forms of technology made, good labour supply, transportation improved, Britain was getting a good supply of raw material, there were capitals with money to invest in new factories.
What was the social effect of the Industrial Revolution? In every country farmers and workers lost their jobs, child labor, populations shifts, unsafe working and living conditions.
What was the cause of Concert of Europe and who led this meeting? Leader was Prince Metternich and the cause of the Concert of Europe was a result of the era after Napoleon and the French Revolution.
What was the effect of the Crimean War? Principle of Legitimacy, Principle of Intervention, Unification of Italy, and Unification of Germany.
What is Principle of Legitimacy? Lawful monarchs from the royal family who rules before Napoleon would be restored to their positions of power.
What is Principle of Intervention? It is the idea that great powers have right to send armies into countries where they are revolutions to restore legitimate governments.
What is Unification of Italy? Austria was still dominant power on Italian Peninsula, revolution failed so people looked to northern Italian state of Piedmont for leadership in achieving unification.
What is Unification of Germany? Frankfort assembly failed to achieve unifications of Germany and Germany's looked to Prussia for leadership for unification.
Who was Karl Marx and his beliefs? Revolutionary communist, believed that capitalism exploited people of low socioeconomic status, believed that one day the proletariat would rebel and this would lead to economic breakdown of capitalism, capitalism would then be replaced by communism.
What was the effect of the 2nd Industrial Revolution? New materials, increased fast production, reduction of prices on everyday goods, new techniques on manufacturing items, increased capital 2 finance businesses helped spur industrial expansion also with new technologies in transportation & communications
What was the White man's burden? The supposed responsibility of the white race to provide care for their non-white subjects.
What is Direct Rule? It is a sophisticated system of colonial rule where the colonial masters get involve in oppressing their subject and imposing their rule more directly such as policy of assimilation and policy of association in their colonies.
What is Indirect Rule? A simple system of colonial rule with the use of leaders as a ruling body of implement of their colonial masters, decisions taken by the leaders are under control of their colonial masters.
What was Sepoy Mutiny? Discontent with British administration in India led to numerous mutinies in 1857 and 1858 - the revolt was put down after several battles and sieges.
What were Spheres of Influence? Areas where imperial powers had exclusive trading rights.
What was the MAIN causes of WWI? Militarism (aggressive prep 4 war, leaders made plans 4 quickly mobilizing millions of soldiers), Alliances (2 alliances, triple alliance, triple entente), Imperialism (empires became nations & extension of power), Nationalism (pride in power & nations).
Which MAIN cause led to Archduke Ferdinand's assassination? Nationalism
What is Total War? Complete mobilization of people and resources.
What is WWI? Differences between Eastern and Western fronts
What were the reasons US joined WWI? Sinking of the Lusitania, Zimmerman note, German Submarine Warfare.
What is Fascism? Glorifies his country above individual.
What is appeasement? Give countries what they want to keep peace.
What were the Nuremberg Laws? Determine who is a jew, stripped jews of their civil rights, excluded jews from German citizenship, yellow star of David and name cards saying that they are Jewish, forbade marriage between Jews and Germans.
What was the reasons Hitler gained control of Germany (also ways he violated Treaty of Versailles)? He was able to convince the german people that fascism will be the way out of poverty the german people endured after WWI.
What is Genocide/Ethnic cleansing? The final extermination to execute Jews.
What was the Five Year Plans? It was a set of economic goals for five year periods.
Why did Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor? Dominate the Pacific Ocean, destroy the US fleet, knock out the US.
What were the roles of women during WWII? Took over jobs of the men who were fighting.
What is Island Hopping? Procedure used by the allies to attack islands occupied by the Japanese during WWII.
What ways did Britain resisted Germany's attacks? The British Air Force and Navy deterred the Germans from attacking the British Island.
What was the impact of D-Day? Allies were able to establish a foothold on the european continent and open a second front against Germans.
What is the Cold War? A war that was fought without guns or bombs between the soviet union and western allies.
What is the Berlin Blockade? Soviet Union blocked off East Berlin from the Allies.
What was the Marshall Plan? Truman Doctrine was followed in June 1947 by European Recovery Program. Proposed by General George C Marshall, US secretary of state.
What was the Berlin Wall's purpose? To divide east and west Germany.
What is Detente? Positive relationships between countries.
What is NAFTA? North Atlantic Free Trade Agreement
What is African National Congress? Developed in South Africa to fight apartheid.
What was the impact of OPEC? Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, US gas shortages, rising of gas prices.
