French revolution 1789-1799 period of social and political disturbance in France, the French government went through structural changes brought with violence in new ideals based on new principle, rights, and citizenship.
King Leopold ll Led the first European efforts to develop the Congo River basin, making the formation of the Congo Free State.
Adam Smith Scottish moral philosopher and a pioneer of political economy, best known for two classic works: The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759) An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations (1776), considered the first modern work of economics.
Karl Marx A German philosopher, economist, sociologist, historian, journalist, and revolutionary socialist. His work in economics laid the basis for the understanding of labor and its connection to the capital, and has influenced much economic thought.
Marxism Introduced in 1848, an economic and sociopolitical worldview and method of socioeconomic inquiry based upon a materialistic interpretation of historical development.
Tokugawa Japan Tokugawa period (1603-1867) the final period of traditional Japan, of internal peace, political stability, and economic growth under the Shogunate military dictatorship under Tokugawa Leyasu.
Meiji Restoration/Era A chain of events that restored the imperial rule to Japan I 1868 under Emperor Meiji. The restoration led to changes in the social and political structure in Japan.
Suffrage Movements Limited voting rights gained for women in 1893 in New Zealand.
Berlin Conference 1885 regulated European colonization and trade in Africa during the New imperialism period, coincided with Germany’s sudden emergence as an Imperial power.
The Scramble for Africa 1880-1900 a period of rapid colonization of the African continent by European powers.
Zulu Kingdom A monarchy in Southern Africa that extended along the coast of the Indian Ocean, Came into conflict with British Empire in the 1870s during the Anglo-Zulu War and was defeated.
Enlightenment A cultural movement of intellectuals in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Voltaire A French Enlightenment writer, famous for his attacks on the established Catholic Church, and advocacy of freedom of religion, freedom of expression, and separation of church and state.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau 18th century Romanticism of French expression, his political philosophy influenced the French Revolution.
John Locke English philosopher and physician regarded as one of the most influential of Enlightenment thinkers, writings influenced Voltaire and Rousseau.
Reign of Terror September 5th 1793-July 28th 1794, a period of violence that occurred after the onset of the French Revolution, incited by conflict between rival political groups, mass executions of “enemies of the Revolution”.
Montesquieu A French social commentator and political thinker who lived during the age go Enlightenment, famous for his articulation theory of separation power.
Louis XVI King of France form 1774-1791, was execute during the French Revolution.
Declaration of the Rights of Man A fundamental document of the French Revolution and the history of human rights, 1793
Maximilien de Robespierre French lawyer and politician, one of the best known and most influential figures of the French Revolution.
Napoleon Bonaparte A French military and political leader who rose to prominence in the later stages of the French Revolution.
Haitian Revolution 1791-1804 a slave revolt in the french colony of the Saint-Domingue which culminated in the elimination of slavery and founding of the Haitian Republic.
Mahatma Gandhi Leader of Indian nationalism in British-ruled India, led India to independence and inspired movements for non-violence.
Taiping Rebellion A massive civil war in Southern China from 1850-1864 against the ruling Manchu-led Qing Dynasty.
Boxer Rebellion A movement by the Righteous Harmony Society in China between 1899-1901, opposing foreign Imperialism and Christianity.
Latin American Independence Movements Revolutions in the early 18th and 19th centuries, resulted in the creation of independent countries in Latin America.
Indian Revolt of 1857 An Indian Rebellion that escalated and posed a threat to company power in the region, contained only with the fall of Gwalior on June 20th 1858.
