| sphinxes | imaginary creatures with bodies of lions and heads of other animals or humans |
| obelisk | a tall, four sided pillar that is pointed on top |
| King Tutankhamen | Egyptian pharaoh who was buried with many treasures |
| surplus | when there is more food than needed |
| Mesopotamia | region in SW Asia between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, one of the world's oldest civilizations |
| Hammurabi's Code | a set of 282 laws that dealt with almost every part of daily life |
| Fertile Crescent | a large area of rich, or fertile, farmland |
