| How is humanity's experience of God mediated? | By people,events, and things which are rooted in history. These are known as sacraments. |
| What is the function of a sacrament? | Each sacrament is a sign which points to something beyond itself. Each sacrament brings the grace of God into our world and into out lives. Sacraments are "perceptible signs (words and actions) accessible to our human nature." |
| Why is Jesus the first sacrament? | Because in Jesus, God is fully present to us. In Jesus, the almighty God becomes accessible to human beings. |
| Define Liturgy | Liturgy is the official, public worship of the Church. |
| What does it mean to say the "sacraments cause what they signify?" Give an example. | "Sacraments cause what they signify" means that they reveal something about God and they make what they have revealed reality. For example, a person who is reconciled in the sacrament of Penance is given the ability to reconcile in his or her daily life. |
| How does understanding the liturgy as the "work of the community" explain the necessity of attending Sunday Mass? | Since God is present in liturgy, every liturgy has the power to transform us, and through us, to transform the world. |
| How do the sacraments give definition to the Church? | The sacraments ensure that the Church does what Christ would in the world. Each of the sacraments gives shape to our communal identity as the body of Christ. |
| What is necessary for the sacraments to be able to transform individuals? | The power of the sacraments to transform individuals depends on the disposition of the individual. |
| What would the Church be like without the sacraments? | Without the sacraments, it would be difficult to define the Church. The sacraments give concrete shape to our definition as a community rooted in Jesus Christ. |
| What does it mean to say that each sacrament has a "lasting effect"? | The sacraments have a lasting effect which points beyond the celebration of the sacrament itself; that is, a lasting presence of Christ who forgives, heals, redeems, sustains, strengthens, leads, unites, and loves us. |
| What is the lasting effect of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders? | An "indelible spiritual mark" or "character." |
| What is the lasting effect of Marriage? | The permanent bond between a husband and wife, which is also the living symbol of the bond between Christ and the Church. |
