How did the Catholic Church respond to Martin Luther? Excommunicated from the Church.
What helped to spread Martin Luther's ideas throughout Europe? Printing Press made ideas more accessible, more respect for education
In response to the Reformation, what did the Catholic Church do? Called the Council of Trent - recognized there was corruption within the Church, tried to fix it
The Jesuits, led by Ignatius Loyola, did what to help the Catholic Church? Sent out many missionaries through Europe and the world
What was the Inquisition? A Catholic court used to stop heresy - had absolute powers and could arrest and imprison anyone on the slightest suspicion
What did Henry VIII do to the Catholic Church in England? Separated from the Catholic Church, created his own - The Church of England. No longer was the pope the head of the church in England - the king now was.
What is a Protestant? Someone who "protests" the Catholic Church: Martin Luther, Henry VIII, etc
What did King Henry VIII's daughter Mary try to do to religion in England? Tried to suppress the Protestant Church of England and bring the country back to Catholicism. Didn't work - when she died, her sister Elizabeth became queen and reverted back to the Church of England
