Sharia Islamic Law, based on the words and deeds of Muhammad and on comments written by Muslim Scholars and law makers.
Bazzara A traditional open-air market with shops or raws of stalls.
Fellaheen peasants or agricultural workers in Egypt and other Arab countries
Souq An open-air market place in an Arab city.
Casbah An old crowded section of a North African city.
Terrace A flat platform of earth cut into the side of a slope, used for grounding crops in steep places.
Multiethnic Having many ethnic groups living within a society.
Hausa-Fulani Nigeria's largest ethnic group.
Yoruba Nigeria's second largest ethnic group.
Igobo Nigeria's third largest ethnic group.
Kwame Nkrumah Founder of Ghana's independence movement and Ghana's first president.
Sovereignty Political control.
Coup The sudden overthrow of a government by force.
Desertification The process by which fertile land becomes too dry or damaged to support life.
Overgrazing Allowing too much grazing by large herds of animals.
Monastery A place where people, especially men known as monks, live a religious life.
Geez An ancient Ethiopian language that was once used to write literature and religious texts but is no longer spoken.
Lingua franca A language used for communication among people who speak different first language used for communication among people who speak different first languages.
Privatization The sale of government-owned industries to private companies.
Multiparty system A political system in which two or more parties compete in elections.
Kikuyu The largest ethnic group in Kenya.
Maasai A seminomadic ethnic group in Kenya.
Harambee A social policy started by Jomo Kenyatta and meaning "Let's pull together" in Swahili.
