QuestionAnswer
How was Germany after WWI? Poor, weak, and embarrassed.
Who did Hitler blame for all of Germany's problems? France because they took away army, money, and pride from Germany. The Jews because they control all the money and are responsible for the stock market crash.
What is the official start of WWII? When Germany invades Poland.
Why did the US join WWII? Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and it got personal.
Where did the US drop bombs in Japan? Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
How many people died in WWII? 37 million.
Who emerged as superpowers after World War II? The United States and the Soviet Union.
What does the USSR stand for? Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.
What did the West think Russia was going to do? Spread communism everywhere.
What did the Russia think the West was going to do? Spread capitalism everywhere.
Why would someone want to be communist? A little food for everyone is better than starvation.
What is a proxy war? A war instigated by a major power that does not itself become involved.
Why is it called the Cold War? The two main sides (US and USSR) never fought. Both sides had nukes but did not want to use them.
In the Space Race, what did the USSR do first? Put the first satellite in space, the first living thing in space, and the first person in space.
In the Space Race, what did the US do first? Put the first man on the moon.
Talk about the Korean War. North Korea becomes communist and tries to take over South Korea, America wanted to make all Korea capitalist. The outcome was two countries- one communist and one capitalist.
What was the Cuban Missile Crisis? Khrushchev sent Castro a nuclear bomb to Cuba and JFK send ships to stop the bomb in the middle of the Atlantic. Cuba got to stay communist as long as the nuke went back to the USSR.
North Vietnam was Communist and South Vietnam was... capitalist.
Why did the Vietnam War happen? The US feared North Vietnam would make all of Asia communist.
Gandhi used nonviolence for self-rule in India, examples of this are: hunger strikes, peaceful protests, and civil disobedience.
Who else used nonviolence to gain civil rights? Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
After WWI, Lenin made what plan? The New Economic Plan, where the government controls the crops. He kept his promises of production.
When Lenin dies, who takes over? Stalin
Let's talk about Mao Zedong. Mao ran China very strictly, forcing people to wear the same clothes and steer away from all things Western.
What was the Apartheid? England started an apartness in South Africa, making all blacks non citizens. They weren't allowed to marry whites and could not vote on certain things.
Who lead protests for equality in South Africa? Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela was put in prison for 27 years and when he was released... he ran for president, won and ended the apartheid.
What is a Military-Industrial Complex? A country's industrial system is focused on the military.
What is the IRA? Irish Republican Army.
The IRA forced a treaty that... freed most of Ireland except six countries in the north.
An Orthodox Islamic that grew out of Taliban was an... anti-governmental group in Afghanistan that took over after the USSR lost power.
