What is feudalism? Land basis of wealth; Land (fiefs) given to nobles by king in exchange for loyalty
What are some obligations a knight has to his king in exchange for a fief? Serve in the king's army, supply king with additional knights in time of war, serve in the king's court, give king advice on political matters, give money on special occasions
What rights did a noble have in return for performing the duties to his king? Protection and Justice
Who was at the bottom of the social chain in the feudal system? Serfs and Freeholders
What is the difference between a serf and freeholder? Serfs: virtually no power, part of property Freeholders: owned the land they farmed which they paid the lord a yearly fee for.
What is the Doomsday Book? Record of how many people live in England, what they owned, how much land being farmed - so William the Conqueror could learn about it
What is the worst thing a person could have done to them? Be excommunicated from the Church (membership with the Church is cancelled)
What is a Crusade? War where Christians fight against "heretics"
What are some consequences of the Crusades? lots of deaths; learning from Muslim scholars astronomy, philosophy, mathematics, literature; sparked trade

What method of farming was used on fiefs? Three field system: 2 planted, one fallow
What is money or produce given to the Church - worth approx. 1/10 of one's income? Tithe
What are the three Trials used to determine if a person was innocent or guilty in the Middle Ages? Trial by Ordeal, Trial by Battle (only nobles allowed), Trial by Water
What did a Manor Court decide? Settled minor disputes, punished petty criminals, assault, public drunkenness - Villagers decided who won the case
What did a Royal Court decide? Dealt with serious crimes such as murder, rape, treason, burglary. Could order executions.
What did a Church Court decide? Held authority over Church members - more lenient than Royal Court.
What is the term for a person who swears loyalty to a lord? Vassal
What is a Feudal Contract? The bargain between a lord and his vassal
