What is another name for the OLD stone age? Paleolithic
What us another name for the NEW stone age? Neolithic
That is another name for human-like creatures? Hominids
All hominids including Homo Sapiens originated (or began) on what continent? Africa
How do we know that all hominid species originate (or began) in Africa? The oldest fossils have been found in Eastern Africa
Why was Early Man able to live in different climates? Many hominid species (Early Man) were able to adapt to their environment.
What was the main way hominids obtained food during the paleolithic period? Hunting, Gathering & Scavenging
Describe what like was like during the Old Stone Age (Paleolithic Period)? *Lived in small clans *Nomadic *Simple Tools *Simple Language *In some cases, they created cave art
What does Nomadic meen? People (early humans) that move from place to place
Why were early humans nomadic? Searching for food, water, or shelter.
What does the word CLAN mean? A small group of people that are closely related
When was FIRE invented? Paleolithic
Early Man adapted to their environment. Give some examples of how they adapted. *Made tools from the bones of animals and stone *Wore animal skins to keep warm *Built shelters *Made FIRE
Early Man migrated from Africa to other continents. Only on species colonized Africs, Europe, Asia AND the americas. Which one? Homo Sapiens
Why were Homo Sapiens albe to cross over Asia and into the Americas? Sea levels were low during the ice ages making it possible for Homo Sapiens to cross the land bridges.
What does "Homo Sapiens" mean? It means "Wise Men". Homo Sapiens are todays modern humans.
Why was language invented during the OLD stone age (Paleolithic Period)? It helped early man work together to hunt animals more effectively.
What invention marks the end of the Paleolithic period and the beginning of the Neolithic Period? Agriculture (The demestication of plants & animals)
How was life different in the Neolithic Period? *Lived in permant homes *Lived in larger groups *created advanced tools *created pottery *began to weave clothing *specialized labor
What was the primary source of food for people living during the NEW stone age? Agriculture
What invention allowed people to live in larger permanant homes and allowed people ro do specialized jobs? Agricuture
Now that farmers were able to grow a surplus of food and store the extra food in clay jars, this allowed some people to specialize in other jobs. What were some other jobs created in the Neolithic period? potter, weaver, soldier, priest, artistans
Sometimes the Neolithic period is also known as the Neolithic (Agriculture) Revelution. Why? A revolution refers to a drastic change. There were drastic changes in the lives of people when agriculture (farming) was invented.
Who studies bones & artifacts to learn about past cultures? Archaeologists
What are artifacts? Man made objects such as tools, jewlry & clothing. Any man made object can become an artifact.
What method do scientists use to determine the age of bones or artifacts? *How deep in the Earth the object was found *Other objects found around them *Radiocarbon Dating
What is the difference between prehistory and history? *Prehistory- before the invention of writing *History- writing was invented
When people started to live in larger settled communitied, what do you think was created to maintain order? Government & Laws
Over time, skilled artistans used metals to make stronger rools and weapons. What did they make by mixing copper & tin? Bronze
