| Arms Race | Building huge armies and navies to outdo rival nations and protect world interests |
| Alliance | Agreements between competing blocs nations to help each other if war breaks out |
| Mobilization | The assembly and movement of troops |
| Entente | An understanding between nations |
| Balance of Power | A situation in which each side had equal power |
| Central Powers | One of two alliances, includes Germany and Austria-Hungary |
| Allied Powers | One of two alliances, includes Russia, Italy, France, England, and eventually the USA |
| Neutrality | A policy of not taking sides |
| Front | A line along which opposing armies face each other |
| Trench Warfare | Soldiers fought from two lines of trenches or ditches |
| Civilian | Nonmilitary citizens |
| Propaganda | Information designed to influence public opinions |
| Soviets | Committees to represent workers interests |
| Bolsheviks | The most radical of the socialists groups |
| Conscription | Requires citizens to serve in the military for a period of time |
| Rationing | A system of limiting the amount of foods and materials in use |
| Blockade | The use of warships to stop goods from entering or leaving ports |
