AP World History Comparative Essay flashcards

Why did the Qing Dynasty Fall? They had corruption in the civil service exam process, food shortages, Europeans (Opium Wars), and the Taiping Rebellion.
What were the Opium Wars? When the Europeans decided to trade opium with the Chinese due to silver shortages. The Chinese people became dependent upon the opium, and when the Chinese requested the Europeans to stop, the E's felt threatened. The junks are destroyed by British boats
What was the Taiping Rebellion? Led by Hong Xiuquan's "Heavenly Kingdom of Peace" and 20 - 30 million people were killed. Nanjing was captured as their capital city.
Why did the Ottoman empire fall? The expansive land was difficult to control (invasions from Russia), and the Crimean war.
What was the Crimean war? When Russians approached and threatened the Ottoman land (to take control), caused warfare to modernize (more accurate rifles / techniques).
Why did Russia fall? Decembrist Revolt, politics were unstable, & various people competed for power.
Define conservatism Requesting very slow - no change. Maintains traditional institutions.
Define Liberalism Requesting change through law reform rather than revolution.
Define Radicalism Requests sudden revolutionary change in government and society.
What was the Decembrist Revolt? Was led by western oriented army officers, and the uprising was eventually crushed.
