| Deficit Spending | situation in which a government spends more money than it takes in |
| Louis XVI | King of France during the French Revolution |
| Bastille | fortress in Paris used as a prison; French Revolution began when Parisians stormed it in 1789 |
| Marquis de Lafayette | French soldier who served under George Washington in the American Revolution |
| Marie Antoinette | Louis XVI's wife; queen of France during the French Revolution; unpopular and vain |
| Sans-culotte | Working class man or woman who made the French Revolution more radical; called such because he or she wore long trousers instead of the fancy knee breeches that the upper class wore |
| Jacobins | Member of a radical political club during the French Revolution |
| Girondin | Moderate political faction stemming from the Jacobins; did not support Parisian military; did not want Louis XVI executed because they thought he would become a martyr |

| Robespierre | A French political leader of the 18th century. A Jacobin, a radical leader of the French Revolution. Headed the Committee of Public Safety, responsible for the Reign of Terror, was later executed. |
| Reign of Terror | Time period during the French Revolution from September 1793 to July 1794 when people in France were arrested for not supporting the revolution and many were executed |
| Napoleon Bonaparte | Overthrew French Directory in 1799 and became emperor of the French in 1804. Failed to defeat Great Britain and abdicated in 1814. Returned to power briefly in 1815 but was defeated and died in exile. |
| Nationalism | A strong feeling of pride in and devotion to one's country |
| Plebiscite | Ballot in which voters have a direct say on an issue |
| Annex | Add a territory to an existing state or country |
| Continental System | Blockade designed by Napoleon Bonaparte to hurt Britain economically by closing European ports to British goods; ultimately unsuccessful |
| Abdicate | To give up or step doqn from power |
| Battle of Waterloo | This was the battle that Napoleon lost after his return from Elba that ended his reign as French ruler |
| Congress of Vienna | Assembly of European leaders that met after the Napoleonic era to piece Europe back together; met from September 1814 to June 1815 |
| European Balance of Power | Equality of countries so that one won't dominate the rest |
| Concert of Europe | A system in which Austria, Russia, Prussia, and Great Britain met periodically to discuss any problems affecting the peace in Europe; resulted from the post-Napoleon era Quadruple Alliance |
