What were the main exports of Haitian plantations? Coffee and sugar.
Who led the slave insurrection of 1791? Toussaint L'Ouverture.
What was Toussaint L'Ouverture before he led the slave insurrection of 1791? A slave.
What forces invaded Haiti during the slave insurrection? Britain and Spain.
What did the slaves receive after helping the French fight of the British and Spanish during the slave insurrection? They were freed and put into power, but France still controlled them.
What did Napoleon do in 1802? He sent in French troops to end the rule of the former slaves.
What happened to the French troops who tried to retake Haiti? They got owned by the slaves. (LOL)
When did Haiti declare it's independence? In 1804.
Who was governor-general for life after Haiti declared independence? Jacques Dessalines.
What is important about Haiti's independence? They were the first independent state in Latin America.
What were some long-term effects of the Haitian Revolution? France gave up on N.A. colonies, gave U.S. control of N.A.
What were some causes of the Latin American Independence Movements? A growing sense of national identity, resentment of the Spanish/Portuguese economic policies, and European confusion.
Caudillo? Military/political strongmen; dictators in a nutshell.
Why was Latin America slow to industrialize? The monoculture and years of extraction ruined the economy.
Father Hidalgo? Leader of 1st Mexican Revolution, martyred, cried for independence. "El Grito de Delores"
Who took over after Father Hidalgo's death? Jose Morelos.
What did Benito Juarez do? Started social reforms in newly independent Mexico.
What happened in 1910? Diaz takes over as a dictator of Mexico.
What did the Mexican Civil War lead to? The Mexican Constitution.
What was unique about the Brazilian Revolution? No fighting ever occurred.
Who owned Brazil pre-independence? Portugal.
Who took over in Brazil? Pedro, son of King John VI.
What does maroon mean? Fugitive.
What was the Boxer Rebellion? A group of martial arts experts trying to take over China, and almost succeeded if EUR and JAP didn't help out.
What was the Boxer Protocol? China had to pay EUR and JAP for ending the Boxer Rebellion.
When did the Sepoy Mutiny take place? 1857.
What were some causes of the Sepoy Mutiny? The British didn't respect Muslim/Hindu traditions, and they reportedly put pork and beef fat in the bullet cartridges.
What other war was more deadly than the Taiping Rebellion? World War II.
Who led the Taiping Rebellion? Hong Xiuquan (Jesus' brother).
Millenarianism? Religious belief that the turn to a 1,000 year multiple will bring about a new way of life.
What were some rebellions inspired by millenarianism? The Boxer Rebellion and Taiping Rebellion.
What types of ideas influenced most Western Revolutions? Liberal ideas, like John Locke's.
What is an example of a political reform in response to frequent rebellions? The Tanzimat Reforms of the Ottoman Empire.
What led to communism and socialism in Russia? Factory conditions.
Why didn't communism and socialism develop in England and the U.S.? Labor unions helped ease tension.
Mary Wollstonecraft? Creator of feminism, wrote "Conviction".
