Eugene Talmadge Elected governor 4 times (but died before he took office for his 4th term). Did not support the New Deal. Scandal during 3rd term will cause UGA to lose its accreditation. Supported white supremacy and gained most of his votes from rural farmers.
Richard Russell GA Governor and U.S. Senator (seven consecutive terms). chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee-helped to bring military bases to GA. "father of the school lunch program”
Carl Vinson Served in the US House of Representatives for 50 years. (longer than any other congressman in US
Franklin D Roosevelt President. Started the New Deal programs. Visited Warm Spring to help his polio. President during WWII (died before war ended).
William B. Hartsfield Longest serving of the progressive mayors. He purchased a racetrack that became Atlanta’s first airport (Hartsfield International Airport–today is the busiest airport in the world). “Father of Atlanta Aviation”.
Ivan Allen Jr. Allowed African Americans police to arrest whites and allowed African Americans to serve as firefighters. By 1964 he desegregated all public facilities (including schools) in ATL.
Ivan Allen Jr. Forward Atlanta (economy boomed). Brought the following to Atlanta: Braves(baseball), Falcons (football), and the Hawks (basketball).
Ellis Arnall Ga Governor. He reformed GA;s government by: removing the Board of Regents from the Governor’s office, lowering the voting age to 18 years old, abolishing the poll tax in Georgia.
Ellis Arnall revising the state’s constitution, and paying off state debt. First governor to serve 4 year term
Melvin Thompson Lieutenant Governor during the Three Governors Episode. Became Governor when Eugene Talmadge died until election could be held.
Herman Talmadge Eugene Talmadge’s Son. Governor for 2 terms, Expanded education to grades 1-12 and lengthened to 9 months, and later went to be a U.S. Senator. Created 3% sales tax to pay for educational changes
Benjamin Mays Father of the Modern Civil Rights Movement. President of Atlanta's Morehouse College in 1940. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of his students. Taught a non-violent approach to change
Martin Luther King Jr. Civil Rights Leader. Born in Atlanta. Developed a non-violent approach to social change after studying others like Gandhi. Founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Gave the “I have a Dream Speech” at the March of Washington
Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter First African American's to enroll in UGA. Both graduated and went on to successful careers.
Maynard Jackson First African American Mayor of Atlanta. Fought to make sure that minority businesses received their fair share of city contracts. Started MARTA, expanded Hartsfield Airport and helped bring Olympics to ATL.
Lester Madox Owned the “Pickrick”. known as the “axe handle governor”. Appointed more African Americans to state offices than any other governor before him! Started “Peoples Day”.
Andrew Young Aide to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Ga’s first black representative to the House of Representatives since Reconstruction.
Andrew Young US Ambassador to the United Nations. Succeeded Jackson as mayor. Brought the Democratic Convention to Georgia and the 1996 Olympics to Atlanta.
Jimmy Carter From Plains GA. Did not support segregation laws. GA Senator, Governor, and U.S. President. Was president during Camp David Accords and the Iranian Hostage Crisis. Very active as a past president with humanitarian work.
