Female Reproductive Systems - Treatment Procedures

Treatment ProcedureMeaning
Cauterization The use of heat to destroy abnormal tissue, such as can occur, for example, in the lining of the cervix
Cryosurgery The use of cold temperatures to freeze and destroy tissue
Dilation and Curettage (D&C) Widening of the opening of the cervix and scraping of the lining of the uterus to remove tissue and stop prolonged or heavy uterine bleeding
Myomectomy The removal of fibroid (myoma) tissue from the uterus
Tubal Ligation Procedure in which both fallopian tubes are ligated (tied off) in two places with sutures and the intervening segment is burned or removed. This prevents pregnacy
