Evolution of sex 3

mating system

TermDefinition
Social unit the set on conspecific animals that interact regularly and more so with each other than with members of other social units
Mating unit the individuals that mate within a social unit. Subset of social interactions, has a genetic component with the number of matings that result in new members of the social unit.
solitary mating unit is dispersed polygyny or dispersed polygynandry/polygamy
monogamy pair bonding, sexual monomorphism, common in birds. mating system = monogamous or polygamous/polyandrous
Social monogamy there is a lot of cheating but they stay together
True monogamy happens if loyal partners have better rs than those that cheat. occurs when females are rare, female brood time is short, better rs with paternal care, cheating leads to reproductive failure. Aggression to same sexed rivals.
uni female multi male if there is more than on female the other are reproductively suppressed by the dominant female.
callitrichid he dominant females supress the reproduction of other females by using pheromones. They always produce twins and have lactational amenorrhea
uni male multi female males mate polygynously they monopolize access to females and females mate monogamously. There is intense sexual dimorphism in body size and canine size
mulit male multi female mating unit=polygamous both sexes mate with multiple partners
polyandy one female in a group with several males. mate defense polygyny
mate defense polygyny females are defending food they map onto food distribution females will participate i intergroup encounters males are defending mates they map onto the female distribution in inter group encounters males will participate
resource defense polygyny males are defending food to attract females map onto food distribution and participate in inter group encounters. Females don’t defend anything they map male distribution.Females keep other females away from their males and the range(birds and humans)
who will be polygynus sex that invests the least
Why be in a polygynus relationship sometimes females have better r.s mating with an already mated high quality male. Its better to be the second wife of a rich man than the first wife of a poor man
cost of polygyny less parental care, increased competition between females for males provisioning and other resources.
Benefits of polygyny group defense of territory may improve
