Henry of Navarre (Henry IV) France. Originally a Huguenot. Member of the Bourbon dynasty, Converted to Catholicism so he could be accepted by Catholic France. Fighting in England ended when he was crowned. Issued Edict of Nantes.
King Philip II Spain. Catholic. Consolidated Spain and Netherlands, "Most Catholic King", Beat Turkish fleet in Battle of Lepanto, Lost to England in naval battles.
William the Silent Dutch. Resisted the Spanish. Helped Dutch become independent.
Elizabeth Tudor England. Protestant, but moderate. Balanced power between Spain and France.
James I England. Believed in divine right of kings. Struggled against Parliament and Puritans.
Charles I England. Believed in divine right of kings. Accepted petition saying no passing of taxes without Parliament's consent then changed his mind. Lost to Cromwell in English Civil War.
Oliver Cromwell England. Extreme Puritan. Made new model army. Beat royalists in war. Purged Parliament of anyone against him. Rump Parliament had Charles I executed. Declared England a commonwealth. Set up military dictatorship.
Charles II England. Catholic. Son of Charles I. Sympathetic to Catholicism, Suspended the laws that Parliament had passed against Catholics and Puritans.
James II England. Catholic. Named Catholics to high positions in the government, army, navy, and universities.
William of Orange & Mary Dutch/England. Puritan. Invaded England. Almost no bloodshed. Accepted throne in 1689. Also accepted Bill of Rights.
Louis XIV France. Catholic. Absolute monarch. Tried converting Huguenots to Catholicism. Established Versailles.
Cardinal Richelieu France. Catholic. Took away Huguenots political and military power. Came to throne at age of four. Was assisted by Cardinal Mazarin.
Ivan IV Russia. Expanded territories, Crushed power of Russian nobility, Killed son
Peter the Great Russia. Westernized Russia. Borrowed European technology. Made great military power.
