Imperialism
| Term | Definition |

| Imperialism | When one nation extends its control to the government and economy of another nation |
| Direct Rule | A colony that was ruled directly |
| Indirect Rule | The country ruled the colony indirectly |
| Protectorate | System which people have their own government, but the home country has the final say in important matters |
| Sphere of Influence | A region where the imperial power had the right to trade or invest |
| Sovereignty | The right to pick your own government |
| Zulu War | Or Anglo-Zulu war, a Zulu leader stood up to the British and were defeated |
| Sepoy | Indian soldiers |
| Viceroy | A monarch's representative |
| Open Door Policy | All nations would have equal trading rights in China |
| Boxers | A society that calls itself the Society of the Harmonious Fist, Europeans and Americans call them boxers |
| Modernize | Advance technology |
