| Absolute monarch | A monarchy that isn't limited by a constitution |
| Divine right | A ruler's belief that his right to rule comes straight from God |
| Huguenots | A French Protestant, esp. of the 16th and 17th centuries |
| Edict of Nantes | Law passed by Henry IV in 1598 that granted religious freedom to the Huguenots |
| Intedants | A government office of management over certain aspects of civilian life |
| Geocentric theory | The theory that Earth is the center of the universe and that all other bodies orbit around it |
| Scientific Revolution | The dawning of modern science during the early modern era |
| Heliocentric Theory | Theory that the Sun is at the center of the universe and that all other planets orbit around it |
| Scientific method | Series of steps that allow a problem to be tested and the results to be analized in a scientific manner |

| Tennis Court Oath | An oath taken by the French Third Estate stating that they would stay together until a constitution had been established |
| Great Fear | A period of panic during the French Revolution when the peasants belivee the king was going to overthrow the Third Estate |
| Bastille | A fortress in Paris that was used as a prison |
| Jacobins | A radical republican during the French Revolution |
| Guillotine | A device that cut people's heads off |
| Reign of Terror | Period of the French Revolution where thousands of people were executed |
| Napoleonic Code | The civil code of France |
| Battle of Trafalgar | A naval battle where the French and Spanish fleets were destroyed by the English |
| Continental System | Napoleon's plan to blockade all British ships |
| Peninsular War | The war where the French forces were defeated by the Spanish, British, and Portuguese |
| Scorched-earth policy | Military practice of destroying all agriculture and resources of an area before leaving it for the enemy |
